A C A D E M I C S : An Integrated Curriculum
The Curriculum at the Russell Byers Charter School includes outcomes based on district, state and national standards as stipulated in the Philadelphia School District's Core Curriculum. The Curriculum includes best practices of instruction and assessment in all disciplines including Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Cultural Arts, which includes Spanish, Art, Physical Education and Music. The Curriculum, what is being taught, is directly linked to instruction, how it is being taught, and the measure of what is taught and learned is how the curriculum is being assessed.
Two programs that are used as resources for teachers to implement the curriculum are Harcourt Trophies, the Language Arts Program, and Harcourt Math, the mathematics program. Both offer a structure for multidisciplinary teaching of content and skills consistently in grades 4 Kindergarten through sixth. In addition to these resources, the School embraces Expeditionary Learning as a school design model and requires teachers to incorporate balanced literacy and Reader's and Writer's Workshops to stimulate problem solving and thinking skills in all disciplines.
The Curriculum is assessed by means of standardized tests, including the Terra Nova and PSSA, as well as by imbedded assessments designed by teachers through observing and working with students in multiple ways.
