A B O U T U S : Location and Space
The Russell Byers Charter School opened in the fall of 2001 in a rented space that became too small by the following school year, when the 3rd Grade was added. The three stories and 58,000 square feet of our new building at 1911 Arch Street have allowed us to grow to 6th Grade and easily accommodate the entire school of 400 students.
The location in Center City is perfectly suited to the school's academic life. The ELS curriculum involves students in their community. At 1911 Arch, the students are just a few blocks from the Franklin Institute, the Please Touch Museum, Moore College of Art, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Central Branch of the Free Library, and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.
And our home base supports their studies when they return from expedition trips, with 18 large classrooms, a special room for science, a foreign language room, a computer lab and computers in each classroom, a bright studio for art, a music room, and bright passages and windows to each room to promote the philosophy of education being open and fluid. Meetings of the entire school- so important to the RBCS culture- are held in a bright and open multipurpose room, where students can also share their learning through presentation and perform together in concerts and plays. In addition, the school hosts plenty of gallery and hallway showcases to further display the talents of our students.
This sense of fellowship also enhances the school's Peace Program, as older children and younger once spend time together and all members of the school community can get to know one another.
